How to Take Care of Cashmere

Cashmere has many properties that make it a favorite fabric to many people. A cashmere garment will keep you feeling comfortable and looking stylish. And if properly cared for, they can last for many years. So how should you take care of your favorite cashmere sweater?

What is cashmere?

Cashmere is a special yarn that comes from rare fibers found in the undercoat of cashmere goats. It has both water-resistant and strong insulating properties.

Properly wash and dry

Unlike wool, cashmere improves with wears and washes by becoming softer and developing a slightly fluffy layer. To clean cashmere, you can hand wash or machine wash it. If you machine wash the garment, be sure to turn it inside out. You’ll also want to select a delicate wash cycle and use a delicate washing detergent. Do not use bleach. To dry, lay the garment on a flat surface somewhere that is not in direct sunlight. Do not wring it out or hang it to dry.

Storage

To help your cashmere keep its shape, fold it to store rather than hang it. If you won’t be wearing the garment for an extended period of time, place it in a sealable garment container so that moths can’t wreak havoc on it. Also try to keep it away from things made from Nylon, as Nylon can damage cashmere fibers.
